Modal headers appear over the top of each page in our login form. They provide visual clutter by repeating the information in every field. Instead, we could just keep the login button on the bottom right and add a link below that takes us to our main page. Our users are, by and large, account managers who are used to navigation that doesn't require much thought. They can jump around the site with a single click and do so without a moment's thought. But to our customers who only need to sign in once every few months, we could make our nav a bit more user-friendly. Clicking on the Login button in the nav bar takes us to our login form. Redundant text is everywhere. No one would be harmed by eliminating the 'Home' link from the nav bar or the button below it that takes us to the home page. And while the process of creating a new product might be a little more tedious, users would find it much easier than having to change the address of all the links in their bookmarks. Our primary interaction on any given page is scrolling, not clicking. Designing a form that allows users to focus on what's important isn't just good UX, it's good design. And this is what matters. Design for users, not for ourselves. I'd wager that most usability and accessibility issues we see on web sites are not a result of misaligned visual elements or broken link paths but instead a result of insufficient experience with technology and a lack of understanding. In terms of design, those issues can be addressed. In terms of usability, they cannot. I have been creating web sites for over fifteen years. Throughout that time, my business has changed but the web is not that much different. The sites I'm building these days require me to write HTML and CSS, tweak images, use JavaScript, and understand how the underlying page structure works. I've become more than a little familiar with responsive design and responsive grids and have become very comfortable with working in a design system such as Foundation. I've even experimented with using React and Vue for single-page apps, though I'm not a developer by trade. And most importantly, I've learned to build fast, flexible and beautiful sites. But what I'm still missing is an understanding of how users think. I am in a fortunate position, a position that other professionals and organizations couldn't even dream of.
